The tote bag

The tote bag x Empowering Sagar

More than a tote bag

Every bag begins with a promise made on the shores of Sagar Island, where communities supported by the Prameya Foundation are working to bring mangroves back to life.

Made from organic cotton with an ocean-bound plastic base and lining, it is built for everyday use, but its deeper purpose lives in the landscape and community it helps support. More than a merchandise tote bag, it is a reminder of coastal livelihood and the people working to restore and protect their homes.

Materials

The main body of the bag is made from high quality organic cotton. The base and inner lining are made from Ocean-Bound Plastic that is collected and processed in India, close to the communities working on mangrove restoration. The bag is also produced in India, keeping the supply chain near the source of the recovered plastic.

Product care

Spot clean with mild soap and cold water, then allow the bag to air dry. Avoid machine washing, bleaching or tumble drying to protect the structure of the cotton and the OBP lining. Store it in a dry place when not in use.

Impact

One mangrove is planted for every bag purchased. Mangroves help absorb carbon dioxide, protect coastlines from erosion and cyclones, and create habitats that support rich biodiversity. Their roots also help stabilise the soil, which strengthens the safety and livelihoods of nearby communities.  Schools and families in the area are part of this wider ecosystem of care, as healthier coastlines create safer living conditions and a more stable environment for future generations.

Project Supported

Each bag supports the Sagar Island Mangrove Reforestation Project in India, led by the Prameya Foundation. The project aims to restore 10 hectares of degraded land through the planting of 200,000 mangrove trees. The work brings together local expertise and community effort, from selecting and preparing the site to nursing propagules in a nearby nursery run by local women.

Protecting coastal livelihood

Along the forest edges of the Sundarbans, life is shaped by water, weather and the forest itself. The local communities carry the weight of climate change despite having the least control over it.

The Prameya Foundation brings two strands together, knowledge and nature. The team offers community education and skills so families have safer income options and a stronger voice in local decisions…
